1 PRODUCT, 3 PACKAGES

PACKAGING DESIGN

This project explores how one product, sunscreen, can be redesigned through packaging to serve different audiences. I created three distinct packaging solutions for the same product, each tailored to a specific group: children ages 6 to 10, U.S. college students ages 19 to 28, and seniors ages 65 and up.

Using empathic and visual research, I identified key user needs related to usability, accessibility, and visual appeal. These insights guided the development of audience-appropriate visual systems and three-dimensional packaging forms. I produced dielines and physical prototypes for each solution, with careful attention to structure, functionality, and typography on 3D surfaces. The final designs demonstrate how thoughtful packaging can adapt to different users while maintaining clarity, purpose, and consistency.

DEMOGRAPHIC ONE

The children’s sunscreen packaging was designed to feel friendly, approachable, and safe while still communicating trust to parents. Soft, ocean-inspired colors and a playful whale character create an inviting visual identity that resonates with kids ages 6 to 10 without feeling overly juvenile. The bold typography and clear SPF labeling ensure important information is easy to spot, while the simple box structure supports straightforward use and handling. Overall, this design balances fun and function, using character-driven visuals and clarity to encourage independent use while reinforcing reliability and care.

DEMOGRAPHIC TWO

The young adult sunscreen packaging was designed to reflect a lifestyle-driven approach, appealing to college-aged users who value aesthetics, brand identity, and daily practicality. A bold yet minimal color palette, high-contrast typography, and editorial-inspired layouts create a confident, modern visual system that feels stylish and intentional. To support a routine-based mindset, I designed a secondary box that contains three distinct sunscreen products—Prep, Shield, and Recover—each with its own visual treatment while maintaining a cohesive system. The packaging reframes sunscreen as an everyday essential rather than a seasonal product, with clear messaging around daily use, clean ingredients, and versatility. This solution balances visual impact with clarity, positioning the product as both functional and design-forward for an audience that prioritizes self-care, sustainability, and visual culture.

DEMOGRAPHIC THREE

The senior sunscreen packaging was designed with a focus on clarity, comfort, and ease of use for older adults, specifically catering to active, athletic seniors. The color palette draws inspiration from a tennis ball, using a bright yet softened green to signal energy, movement, and outdoor activity while maintaining strong visibility. High-contrast typography and a clean, straightforward layout improve legibility and reduce visual strain, with essential information such as SPF level, water resistance, and skin benefits prioritized. The structure supports easy handling and stability, accommodating users with reduced dexterity. Overall, the design balances vitality and trust, positioning the product as reliable protection for seniors who lead active lifestyles.
